Racing Background

Steve had a typical childhoodSteve had a typical childhood background in racing: go-karts, dirt bikes, flat-bottomed drag boats and ski boats. But it all started again when he purchased his first Ferrari, a 1979 red 308GTS and then another Ferrari, a 1988 red Testarossa. In 1990 he joined the Ferrari Owners Club and held different board positions and ultimately President in 1997. Steve put on several club sponsored track events at Laguna Seca, Willow Springs and Buttonwillow, CA. He enjoyed taking his GTS out on these road racing tracks, and in 1996 bought a 1969 Lotus 61 Formula Ford to compete in vintage racing with VARA and HSR West.

Steve has volunteered as an instructorVARA (Vintage Auto Racing Association) is a club operated by volunteers, guided by members, and has no purpose beyond the enjoyment of Vintage Racing. Their goal is to provide a format for friendly wheel-to-wheel competition, with the vehicles prepared faithfully to their era. Also, there is a family atmosphere that leads to lasting friendships.

For the past couple of years Steve has volunteered as an instructor for the University of VARA.

This is a recognized driving course, approved by SCCA and other racing organizations, to teach all those aspiring racers the basics of racing and car control. For those that have always wanted to road race, check out the VARA site: www.vararacing.com.

Steve MillardSteve and his son David competed in the vintage Formula Ford class. Both father and son won races and several championships. David has sadly quit because of health issues. In 2000 Steve won the Formula Ford Championship and in 2002 the Formula Ford Festival with HSR West. In 2008, Steve won the CSR Championship with VARA in a vintage 1963 Mercury Sport Racer owned by a close family friend Don Moniz. Currently Steve is racing a vintage 1985 Ralt RT5 Formula Super V and a 1969 red Winkelmann WDF1 Formula Ford and is planning to participate in all of VARA’s upcoming races, the schedule is on VARA’s web site. Steve invites everyone to visit us in the pits with your dog or cat and cheer on the CANIDAE vintage race cars. Our crew will happily hand out CANIDAE pet food information and racing decals.

British Extravaganza at Buttonwillow Raceway Park

Steve has volunteered as an instructorSteve represented CANIDAE at the British Extravaganza at Buttonwillow Raceway Park presented by Vintage Auto Racing Association (VARA). Prior to the race Steve and his team were located at a prime spot across from the driver's meeting, adjacent to tech and next to registration, sharing information about Responsible Pet Ownership and CANIDAE's great line of all natural, holistic pet foods and treats.

Steve reported there were many pet owners in attendance, happy to see CANIDAE All Natural Pet Foods helping to sponsor vintage auto racing and pledging their support.

Even the track manager at the event - Warren - stated he is now a proud CANIDAE customer because his finicky dog loves the food!

Steve MillardSteve qualified third overall for Sunday's flag race. He was running in second overall (first in class) until an electrical glitch shut the car off on the back straight for a minute or so. He got it started and went from a lap down back up to the lead lap and finished seventh overall, second in his class. No flag this time, but he was first in year-end points. If Steve can podium at the next race in September he might clinch the championship!
